The Eastern Cape is South Africa’s most underestimated safari province. It sits between the well-marketed Lowveld (Kruger, Sabi Sands) and the well-marketed coast (Cape Town, the Garden Route), receiving a fraction of the attention of either while offering a wildlife and landscape experience that is genuinely distinct from both. The province is entirely malaria-free. It contains multiple Big Five private reserves. It borders two national parks. It has direct air access from all three of South Africa’s major cities. And it offers the practical combination of Big Five safari and exceptional coastline within a single, driveable itinerary.

The Eastern Cape’s Safari Landscape
The province’s safari terrain sits primarily in the Sundays River Valley, the Fish River system, and the coastal hinterland east of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). The dominant habitats are Eastern Cape thornbush, valley bushveld, and the open grasslands of the Great Fish River valley — a landscape visually distinct from the Lowveld’s mopane woodland and the Highveld’s open grassland.
The climate is moderate by South African safari standards: summers (October–March) are warm rather than extreme, winters (April–September) are cool to cold with significant overnight temperature drops but clear skies. The absence of extreme Lowveld summer heat makes the Eastern Cape more comfortable for game drives in December and January than Kruger equivalents.
Principal Safari Destinations
Amakhala Game Reserve
A 7,300-hectare private Big Five reserve in the Sundays River Valley, approximately 75 km north of Gqeberha near Paterson. Established in 1999 from the combined landholdings of local farming families, Amakhala operates eight lodges ranging from five-star tented luxury (Bukela Game Lodge, Amakhala Bush Lodge) to the characterful 1908 settler homestead of Leeuwenbosch Country House. Rates run from R5,040 to R9,320 per person per night, fully inclusive of twice-daily Big Five game drives.
Amakhala’s distinctive qualities: the combination of historic farmstead lodges with genuine Big Five game viewing; Amakhala Safari Lodge’s Tuskers Package offering Addo day excursions; the Bushman’s River corridor for exceptional birding; and an overall character that reflects the particular history of the Eastern Cape frontier rather than the purpose-built aesthetic of newer reserves.
Shamwari Game Reserve
At approximately 25,000 hectares, Shamwari is the Eastern Cape’s largest private game reserve and operates some of South Africa’s finest safari lodges. Eagles Crag and Long Lee Manor at the premium end represent among the best lodge experiences in the country. Rates range from approximately R6,000 to R20,000+ per person per night. Shamwari’s scale gives it a wilderness quality that smaller reserves cannot fully replicate; its premium lodges outperform Amakhala at the very top tier. At the mid-range, Amakhala offers comparable wildlife quality at lower rates.
Addo Elephant National Park
South Africa’s third-largest national park, located 45 minutes northeast of Gqeberha, carries the highest elephant density of any game reserve in the world. The park’s main camp section — the original, fenced elephant sanctuary — can produce encounters with hundreds of elephants in a single morning drive. The park has expanded significantly in the past decade to include a coastal section and the offshore islands of the Greater Addo Elephant National Park, which includes penguin and marine wildlife.
Addo is a self-drive national park with accommodation options at SANParks camps (basic but atmospheric) and private lodges bordering the park’s unfenced areas. It is the most practical day excursion from Amakhala and is included as a standard itinerary component by Amakhala Safari Lodge’s Tuskers Package.
Kariega Game Reserve
A 10,000-hectare malaria-free Big Five reserve on the Kariega and Bushmans rivers, approximately 90 minutes from Gqeberha. Kariega is known for the Thandi rhino story — the dehorned female rhino who survived a 2012 poaching attack and whose recovery has been one of conservation’s more remarkable narratives. Five lodges operate on the reserve, with Settlers Drift leading the premium tier. An excellent choice for travellers who want a second Eastern Cape reserve option alongside Amakhala.
Kwandwe Private Game Reserve
A 22,000-hectare private reserve in the Great Fish River valley, further east and north than the Sundays River reserves. Kwandwe carries the Big Five across spectacular Great Fish River canyon terrain that is visually unlike any other Eastern Cape reserve. Four lodges, all at the premium tier. Rates are high by Eastern Cape standards; the wildlife and landscape quality justifies the premium for travellers seeking the province’s most dramatic scenery.
Getting to the Eastern Cape
Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) Airport (PLZ) is the Eastern Cape’s primary gateway, receiving direct daily flights from Johannesburg (1h15), Cape Town (1h45), and Durban (1h30). East London Airport (ELS) provides alternative access for reserves further east (Kariega, Kwandwe).
Self-drive is practical and common for Eastern Cape itineraries: the roads between Gqeberha, Addo, and the Sundays River reserves are good-quality tar, distances are manageable, and rental vehicles are readily available at PLZ. Most game reserve access roads can be negotiated in a standard saloon car.
